Khao Sok doesn’t have beaches, dive sites, or limestone sea stacks. What it has is a 160-million-year-old rainforest that covers an inland valley at 100–400 meters elevation, hemmed in by karst formations that emerge directly from the jungle canopy. The park is older than the Amazon in geological terms, which contributes to its extraordinary biodiversity: over 180 bird species, hornbills, gibbons, clouded leopards (rarely seen but documented), wild boar, malayan sun bears, and wild elephants in the deeper interior.

The main visitor draw is Cheow Lan Lake — a 165 square kilometer reservoir created when the Ratchaprapha Dam was built in 1982. The lake flooded a limestone karst valley, leaving the tops of the towers protruding from the surface. The resulting landscape is one of the most unusual in Southeast Asia: jungle-covered peaks rising from still water, with morning mist collecting in the valleys between them, and floating raft bungalows positioned to face the formations at dawn.

Staying in the floating bungalows is the experience most visitors come for, and it justifies the distance from Phuket. Getting there from Phuket

The most common routes:

Minivan from Phuket: Shared minivans from various Phuket pickup points run to Khao Sok village (the main tourist hub near the park entrance). Journey time 2–2.5 hours, cost 350–500 THB per person. Departs morning from major hotels; book through your guesthouse or a tour agent in Phuket.

Cheow Lan Lake: day trip vs. overnight

Day trip (from Phuket or Khao Lak): The standard format covers a 2–3 hour boat tour of the lake, swimming from the boat, optional kayaking, and lunch at a floating restaurant. You see the scenery in good light but return before nightfall. The lake is at its most photogenic in early morning and late afternoon — the midday light is harsh.

Overnight stay: Floating bungalows (raft houses) are operated by several private companies with permits to operate on the lake. Most are clustered near the dam entrance but a few are positioned deeper in the reservoir for quieter access. A night on the lake gives you: evening light on the karsts, the sounds of the jungle at night (frogs, insects, occasional gibbons), early morning mist before sunrise, and the best photography light. Prices for floating bungalow accommodation range from 1,500–2,500 THB per person including dinner and breakfast.

Jungle trekking and wildlife

Khao Sok village is the entry point for most trekking routes. The visitor center near the village sells park permits (200 THB per person) and has maps. Guides (mandatory for several of the longer routes) can be hired through guesthouses in the village for 600–1,200 THB per half-day.

Common trekking options:

• Nam Talu Cave route: 7 km round trip through dense jungle to a bat cave. Moderate difficulty; can include a river section requiring wading. 4–5 hours.
• Ton Gloy waterfall route: 3 km to a waterfall suitable for swimming. Easy, suitable for most fitness levels.
• Bang Hua Rat trail: Loop trail through mixed forest with good bird watching opportunities. 2–3 hours.

Wildlife encounters are not guaranteed on any trekking route. Gibbons are reliably audible (their whooping calls carry through the forest in early morning); sightings of the animals themselves are less certain. Hornbills are frequently seen at the forest edges near the village. Wild elephants exist in the park but are not sought out by operators — they’re remote from most visitor areas.

Khao Sok also offers night trekking, which can yield sightings of nocturnal species (civets, slow lorises, and occasionally larger mammals), conducted with local guides.

Khao Sok village: staying in the park

The village of Khao Sok is a 1-kilometer strip of guesthouses, tour operators, and restaurants catering to hikers and nature travelers. It’s not a glamorous destination — the main road is the highway, and the facilities are functional rather than sophisticated. The guesthouses range from basic bungalows (400–800 THB per night) to slightly polished eco-lodge style places (1,500–3,000 THB).

The atmosphere is noticeably different from Phuket’s beach areas or even Krabi. Khao Sok village primarily attracts travelers who are specifically there for the park — hikers, birdwatchers, nature photographers, and people en route to the floating bungalows. The pace is slow, the food is cheap, and the lack of beach infrastructure is the whole point.
